Animals Caring

Invited of all - Zoo owner, Michael Hackenberger, faces four animal cruelty charges after video footage surfaced that appears to show a tiger getting whipped during training. Ontario's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in mid-April, said they investigated alleged abuse at Bowmanville immediately after reviewing the footage that emerged in December. Other Canadian circus companies are removing exotic animals from their performances. The Shrine Circus in Saskatchewan is one of the latest to announce it will no longer have elephants and tigers in its shows. "Our moral compass is switching us in the direction of going away from exotic animals in the circus," Stuart Larson, the Wawa Shriners' provincial event chairperson, told CBC News. For years, animal rights activists, including those in Saskatchewan, have protested the use of exotic animals as circus performers. The long list of animal cruelty complaints are similar to those highlighted in Lauzon's letter to Windsor city council, including the use of whips and electric prods, to the long hours many animals spend in small cages and chains as the circus travels from town to town.
